Teyres

Finally, a Mac-native Excel formula auditor.

Excel for Mac does not have Evaluate Formula. Teyres fills that gap. Press ⇧⌥A on a cell and a panel shows its formula as a tree, one row per sub-expression, with the value Excel calculates for each one. As you move through the tree, the cells involved are highlighted on the sheet.

Free for 10 days with every feature, no card. Then $4 a month. macOS 13 or later, Excel for Mac 16.

Ever tried auditing a formula in Excel for Mac?

There's no Evaluate Formula, so you're left reading a nested formula in the bar and working it out in your head. The auditors that do exist are add-ins, web pages running inside Excel and built for the mouse. We spent too many hours like that, so we built Teyres: a native Mac app that shows you the whole formula and keeps your hands on the keyboard.

What it does

It sits over Excel as a small panel that follows the selected cell, and Excel keeps keyboard focus while it is open. Every action is a keystroke.

⇧⌥A · Precedents

The formula as a tree

Each sub-expression is a row with the value Excel computed for it. Move with W S or the arrow keys, and open or close rows with D A or → ←. The cells a row refers to are highlighted on the sheet while that row is selected.

  • Space moves into a referenced cell and opens its formula, as many levels down as the model goes.
  • Q E go back and forward along the path you took.
  • If Teyres cannot confirm that a value is exact, the row says so.

Tab · Inspector

The cells a SUMIFS matched

Select the SUMIFS, COUNTIFS or AVERAGEIFS row in the tree and the cells it matched are highlighted on the sheet. Press ⌃⌥← and ⌃⌥→ with Excel in front and Excel's selection moves through those cells one at a time. That works from the tree alone; the inspector is for the detail.

  • Tab opens the inspector: the matched cells as a list, with paging for large sets.
  • Each criterion is listed with what it matched, so you can see which one changed the total.

⇧⌥S · Dependents

What depends on a cell

Press ⇧⌥S on a cell. Dependents on the same sheet appear first, then the rest of the workbook is scanned. Space moves to one of them and runs the scan again from there.

⇧⌥D · Consistency map

Formulas that break the pattern

Select a range and press ⇧⌥D. Each cell is drawn as a square coloured by its formula pattern. A constant typed over a formula, or a fill that stopped early, shows up as a square of a different colour. Hover to see the formula. Click to select every cell with that pattern.

Setup

There is no add-in to install in Excel and nothing to configure.

  1. Download and drag to Applications

Open the DMG and drag Teyres into Applications. It opens with a double-click.

  2. Open it

Teyres runs in the menu bar, with no Dock icon. The ƒx icon holds the license, the settings, this tutorial and the diagnostic log. Choose Start free trial… there to get your trial key by email.

  3. Allow Excel access

On first launch a setup window walks you through it. Press Allow… and macOS asks whether Teyres may control Microsoft Excel. Allow it: that permission is how it reads formulas and highlights cells. It never writes to a workbook.

  4. Audit a formula

Put the cursor on a formula and press ⇧⌥A. Move with W S or the arrows, expand with D or →, jump with Space, close with Esc.

Questions

Does it change my workbooks?

No. Teyres reads formulas and values, and highlights cells with temporary formatting that it removes when the panel closes. If Excel is interrupted part-way, the Clear stuck highlights menu item removes anything left behind. It does not write values and does not save the workbook.

Does anything leave my Mac?

There is no telemetry or analytics, in the app or on this site. The app contacts Polar to activate and check your license (your license key, plus this Mac's name when you activate) and teyres.com once a day for updates. Cell contents, formulas and file names are never sent by the app. Problem reports are built on your Desktop and only leave your Mac if you email them. More in the privacy statement.

What do I need?

macOS 13 or later and Microsoft Excel for Mac 16.x (developed and measured against 16.112 and 16.113), on Apple silicon or Intel. It does not work with Numbers, Google Sheets, or Excel in a browser.

How many Macs can I use it on?

Three per license. Activations can be moved between Macs from the customer portal.

What if it is not for me?

Try the 10 days first. If you subscribe and change your mind, email within 14 days for a full refund, no questions asked. You can cancel from the customer portal at any time.

How do updates work?

The app checks once a day and installs signed updates itself. You can also run the check from the menu bar.

Are the values real, or re-computed?

Real. Every value shown was calculated by Excel and read from Excel, so volatile functions, your calculation settings and your locale behave as they do in the sheet. Where the app cannot confirm a value is exact, it tells you.
